Girls no more! There is no more Girls! I am talking about the San Francisco band of course…. I really loved and love their album, I thought ‘Father, Son, Holy Ghost’ was one of the best or even the best album of 2011. Iman told me I overestimated them, but whatever, it has all these catchy melodies, and especially this amazing diversity! It is such a rich collection of sweet hooks. So today is a sad day since Chris Owens has announced via Twitter he was leaving the band:
‘Dear all, This may come as a surprise to many & has been an issue of much thought for me. My decision was not easy to make. I am leaving Girls. My reasons at this time are personal. I need to do this in order to progress. I will continue to write & record music. More will be announced soon. I thank you all for everything. Sincerely-Christopher’
For me, Chris Owens is Girls is Chris Owens, he is the main songwriter for the band, and the lyrics are totally his as he confessed in an interview, ‘The content of the songs is all about myself and my feelings; it's a very disgusting indulgence’. So when he says he will continue to write and record music, I understand that Girls will continue under another form and moniker.
As for the original band, Rolling Stone is reporting that there is no word on whether bandmate/bassist/producer Chet ‘JR’ White will continue with Girls.
However, Owens’ decision must have been quite precipitated since, in a May interview with the Huffington Post, he was talking about his plans for a third album, explaining he wanted to record it ‘basically as soon as possible. As soon as we can find a little break.’
