People of good will may debate it, but if you were to claim George Jones is the greatest singer of the second half of the 20th century, I'd be willing to concede the possibility. Jones is to receive a special merit award at this year's Grammys. I saw him at Carnegie Hall six years ago, and he had broken his arm and seemed very uncomfortable. But he was still George Jones, so who cares?
Also to be honored will be Diana Ross, Gil Scott-Heron, The Allman Brothers Band, Glen Campbell, Antonio Carlos Jobim and the Memphis Horns and who can deny any single name on that list?
But I am especially pleased to see Scott-Heron's name on that list and just disappointed that he died before the honour. Campbell has Alzheimer and I am also pleased it isn't too late for him.
