Now, I know I do this a lot, but I’ve found a new favourite song.
“Four Simple Words” by Frank Turner. Scratch that, everything by Frank Turner at all. However, specifically this tune. First off, his voice is that of an angel. His accent is gorgeous and he articulates so well. The beginning is so mellow and lovely, the piano and his voice pair so well, and the lyrics are adorable, “Because we’re all so very 21st century, you’re probably listening to me on some sort of portable stereo. Maybe you’re sitting on the back of the bus, or it’s running up your sleeve and you’re across from your boss, or you’re sitting in your bedroom on your own with the lights down low.” I was hooked from there. Anticipating the rest of the tune to follow this path, I was grinning by the chorus and how simple yet beautiful it was.
However, after that, it all broke loose and it was flawless. The way it picks up and is so energetic totally does make you want to dance. It’s absolutely brilliant. Frank pulled it off so well, and it totally caught me by surprise in a fabulous way. “Hi ho hi ho hi ho, we’re heading out to the punk rock show” is what kicks it off and makes you want to flail around really stupidly. Another quality one-liner- “Is anyone else sick of the music churned out by lacklustre scenesters from Shoreditch? Yeah it’s all sex, drugs and sins, like they’re extras from Skins…I want bands who had to work hard for their keep.” It’s so perfectly placed and poignant, absolute poetry.
The man’s voice gives me goosebumps and makes the tune addictive. He’s one of the greatest musicians of our time, and doesn’t have nearly enough recognition.
I strongly recommend Iman listen to this song, amongst his others.
“Forget about your bitching and remember that you’re blessed. Punk is for the kids who never fit in with the rest.”
