The First Performance Off U2’s Spiderman On Broadway Is, Of Course, A Travesty

In my pre-teen years I was a comics fiend. Everything and anything, year even DC, but mostly Marvel and of all the Marvel heroes, the misunderstand for ever 17 years old friendly neighborhood Spiderman came first. Brooding, smart alec, misunderstood, always in love. Those Spidey comics of the late sixities man, they rocked.
The cartoon show sucked and the movies were a little whatever but not bad. But I had hopes for the Broadway show despite the ridiculous Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark title. Why? Julie Taymor is a genius Broadway director and you just know this is gonna blow your socks off.
But Bono and the Edge? You just knew these blowhards were gonna suck and suck they do. Reeves is a pretty boy but this song is a horrendous heavyweight piece of bombastic bloat. I dunno about the musical as a whole, maybe the book isn’t crap (it sounds about the classic and best Batman movie -the one from the sixties) and the special effects could be gamechangers. But the music? Not so fast.
