The band Fireworks released a new single, “Glowing Crosses”; it’s a single off of what will be their third full length, titled “Oh, Common Life”. I haven’t really listened to them much at all, so I decided to give ’em a shot, considering they’re now joining The Wonder Years, Modern Baseball, Citizen, and Real Friends on The Greatest Generation Tour. I’m really glad I did.
David, the vocalist, has a really interesting voice. It’s not your typical pop punk sound, and kind of reminds me of Mercy Mercedes (throwback) in its’ higher-pitched quality. Regardless, the band has found a way to use the voice to their advantage and write music around it, so it all fits. I adore the punkier sound of the guitars mixed in with the upbeat drums and strong bass.
“God has a door for you, but keeps it locked. Man can’t walk on water, so I built a dock.” There’s some religious themes that this band tackles, obviously, since their last album was titled “Gospel”. I’m not entirely sure if they’re gonna be sticking with this niche, but with lyrics like, “I stopped searching for the holy ghost because I’m in hell,” you can’t help but think that these guys aren’t Bible-thumpin’ church-goers.
Overall, as much as I enjoy Fireworks and their sound, it just feels like it doesn’t quite fit. The religious lyrics mixed in with others feels awkward and this song isn’t that great. That being said, usually the single(s) are the worst song on a band’s release. I’m crossing my fingers that this is the case, because these guys have immense potential
