Fiona Apple Premieres New Songs At SXSW

These lucky people at SXSW get to see all the cool acts in the music world! And when one of them has been absent from the spotlights for so long, it has to trigger some big reactions, emotions, and some serious twitter trending.

Fiona Apple has scheduled two performances at SXSW this week, and on Wednesday night NPR Music showcase, she performed three new songs ‘Anything We Want’, ‘Valentine’, and ‘Every Single Night’ according to Pitchfork.

She also played old ones like ‘Fast as you can’ (she opened with that one), ‘On the bound’, ‘Paper bag’, ‘A Mistake’, ‘Sleep to Dream’, ‘Extraordinary machine’, ‘Carrion’,  ‘Criminal’, and closed with the Beatles’ cover ‘Across the Universe’

According to several blogs, the line to get in was huge (obviously!), she was intense, and her performance was ‘filled with some high and not-so-high moments’.

She sometimes broke out into a crazy dance (oh yeah, I have seen it when I saw her at Largo a few months ago), she took an angry pose during a song, but people noted that her voice was shaky at times. Oh, but it is pure Fiona! Why everyone is expecting the same unnatural perfection you can hear on the record? Shaky is okay in my world, she is really real, and don’t say this if you don’t want to see her disappear for another 7 years.

She launched a few weird lines like ‘I can’t remember if I sang the second verse…you’re imaginary, you’re not real!’ but she was obviously very nervous. The Antiquiet wrote that she was ‘overwhelmed with anxiety and battling stage fright’ and ‘a bundle of nervous energy and furious intensity’.

Watch the video for ‘Anything We Want’ below, via Twitvid. It is difficult to get a definitive opinion, the slow and gentle tune is not really a ballad but is surely carrying Apple’s usual drama!
