Elton John's Philadelphia Concert Reviewed… In Advance!

Philadelphia Freedom!!!

I’m really excited to be going to the Elton John concert in Philadelphia on Wednesday, and because I’m going to be busy cooking a turkey on Thursday, I thought I would go ahead and write my review of the concert ahead of time.

First of all, it was an incredible show. As this is the 40th Anniversary of his seminal “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” album, he played no less than nine songs from the album, including “Your Sister Can’t Twist” and “Grey Seal.”

This may be “The Diving Board Tour,” but he only managed to play two songs from his new album. Let’s just say some heads are probably rolling back at the office, for MediaTraffic reports only 21,000 copies sold after five weeks of release. Talk about time for a meteoric tantrum.

But we don’t go to an Elton John concert to hear his new album anyway. We go to see how fabulous he is, and collectively we all wonder to the strains of “Funeral For A Friend,” — “what’s he going to wear?” And then he materializes from within a puff of smoke as tiny crystals from his clothes and glasses send sparkles of light throughout the arena. Quite simply, he is marvelous.

Playing hit after hit from his classic albums he did take time to sign autographs for those lucky enough to be in the front row. I wasn’t one of them unfortunately. According to Stubhub, if you have $6,500.00 to spare you can get a 9th row ticket at Madison Square Garden for December 4th, but you’ll have to climb over some folks to get that autograph. Actually just a squiggle with a Sharpie.

The highlight of the evening for me was hearing “Someone Saved My Life Tonight,” one of my favorites. His voice was strong and clear just like I remembered it.

All in all, it was a great evening and I can’t wait to go again. Who would like to join me at Madison Square Garden?
