Yesterday, I found a flyer about the promotion of ‘Between the Bars’, an Elliott Smith tribute at the M-Bar in Los Angeles next week (April 8th and 9th).
It is advertised as a ‘musical dance theater production, in honor of the late Elliott Smith, an Oscar nominated singer songwriter, t-shirt wearing, tattoo displaying, sensitive soul.’
Er…, it’s a weird way to describe Elliott and I have not a clear idea of what to expect, even though there is a little bit more explanation on a website:
‘A collaboration of Los Angeles artists offers an innovative theatrical experience to American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith's repertoire of music. This creative tribute merges live music with contemporary dance and incorporates striking visuals via multi-media. Come experience an evening of Elliott Smith told through the voices of these vibrant artists.’
It is produced by LA filmakers Tobi Sackheim and J.D. Mata, and will feature the dancers Eddie Hawks, Kat Hawks, Alice Ngo. James Keene, Tobi Sackheim, J.D. Mata, Alexandria Yalj, Jodie Mashburn, and Ellen Clifford, the poet Mario Valdez Juarez, the artists Holly Azami, and Heather Azami, and the musicians Morgan Jenkins, Ivan Smirnov, and J.D. Mata.
It’s only $10 and 100% of the proceeds are going to the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund, Free Arts for abused Children and Outside In, all programs for abused, homeless and at-risk children, so it’s a great thing. Here is a video-promo of the spectacle:
