So here is what we have learned gossipwise from listening to Ella’s epicly stunning Twelve Nights In Hollywood
*Frank Sinatra has big, big bucks. In 1961 Ella uses Sinatra has a synonym for much dinero.
* Ellas hasn’t had a hit in awhile, her last one was “Mack the Knife”
*Oscar Peterson was the opening act.
* Ella was an excellent impressionist and included Armstrong, Dinah Washington, Sophie Tucker, Pearl Bailey
* Apparently the new songs were “the only songs that sell nowadays”, which would include Hal’s little brother Mack David’s “Candy”. Not the best song I’ve ever heard but Ella does a pretty good version since it was completely improvised…
And that’s the news from 1961, now back to our regularly scheduled program. Mike Nessing will write about a band whose lead singer died in the mid-70s, Helen Bach will talk about how things were so much better in the eighties, Mary Magpie will reference cute boys for an hour, Todd Leibowtiz will fall for hair metal bands who need toupees and Iman Lababedi will explain why drum machines should rule the world.
