I have only listened to Dum Dum Girls’ new album ‘Only In Dreams’ once, but it quite sounds as I expected, full of that 60s revival girl-group harmonies, with Californian surf-reverb guitars and vocals à la Best Coast (‘In my Head’), which also own a lot to Chrissie Hynde on several tracks (‘Just a Creep’). It’s fuzzy bubble-gum pop with bold and rich vocals.
Although the quartet had released an EP entitled 'He Gets Me High' earlier this year, this is their first album as a full band, since their 2010 album ‘I Will Be’, was mostly recorded by frontwoman Kirsten ‘Dee Dee’ Gundred.
I have read that ‘Hold Your Hand’ (as well as other songs on the album) is about Dee Dee’s mother’s passing, whereas other songs deal with the feeling of separation from her husband (Brandon Welchez of the band Crocodiles): ‘Just about all the songs reflect the fact that I’d been on the road for about a year, pretty much separate from everything real in my life except the band. A lot of it is about distance and detachment.’
‘Only In Dreams' is set to be released on September 27th, and Dum Dum Girls have an in-store at Amoeba in Hollywood on Tuesday September 27th.
