Don McLean gained fame from the song “American Pie”. That’s the tune that had us driving our Chevy’s to the levy but the levy was dry..remember that? “The Day The Music Died” is a catch phrase from this song that is used with wild abandon.
Well McLean at age 66 is thinking of packing it in. For those of you unaware he is not retired as of yet. His career began in the early 60 while still in prep school. Responsible for such classics as “And I Love You So”, “Vincent” and a killer remake of Roy Orbisons “Crying”.
At present there is a PBS documentary showing during their pledge drive “American Troubadour” and mentioned to the newspaper The Tennessean; He told the paper 'I'm 66 years old, and I think I'm going to retire when I'm 70, and do something else, or not do this anymore. I felt for my children, family and my fans all over the world, that it was time for me to put together, in one place, the story of my music, and the story of my life, which are basically totally intertwined.'
Try to catch the documentary on your local PBS station- it’s an interesting 50 year journey.
