I was emailing back and forth with my friend Joe Steinhardt, he is playing the June 9th Muse And Music, and he mentioned Laura Stevenson and the Cans. Laura's sophomore album Sit Resist was released last week by the label Joe co-owns, Don Giovanni Records.
So I checked her out with the usual suspects and I am pretty amazed by this folkie indie chick. The song on YouTube "Masters Of Art" is excellent, it starts like indie rock, a little like Kelley Ryan without the great arrangements, veers into folk, and finds her yelling at the end as it tiptoes towards pop. I plan to pick up some songs when I get the chance.
Then I googled her. And guess what? Laura's Grandpa wrote "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Do You Hear What I Hear" and her Grandma sang with the great Benny Goodman. Wow, Benny Goodman!!! I know Joe, Joe knows Laura, Laura knows her Grandma and her Grandma knew Benny… FOUR DEGREES OF SEPARATION!!
I may go check Laura and the Cans out, May 13th -a Friday!, at Mercury Lounge. I'm in court all day but if I'm not wiped out I wouldn't mind it
