DJ Cobra: Makiing His First Illion -by Woody Fuller

DJ Cobra’s newest album “illionaire” just was released in the end of January, and after being exposed to his debut “Iller”, which received a cool 1/4 million downloads, I was ready to take the trip through his world class mash-ups.
Like his first CD, “illionaire” has around 50 short 1-2 minute mashedup tracks, combining samples from over 300 artists. Immediately, i hear his love for Weezy come out, with “Stuntin like my Daddy” placed, ever so smoothly, over some dubstep and then Lionel Richie, “Easy like a Sunday Morning.”
In comparison to “Iller”, which was very hip/hop heavy, a broader genres of samples were mixed into “illionaire”, which creates a much better balance through out the mix.
In regards to Cobra and his DJ career, there is rarely a night in the year in which he isnt playing at one of the most exclusive and upscale clubs in the greater Los Angeles area or on tour, and has opened for or performed with over fifty gold & platinum recording artists including: Diddy, Prince, Ludacris, Nelly, John Legend and Lady Gaga, to name a few.
As a big fan of mashups since they began to gain popularity over the last 5 years, I really enjoyed this one. Mash ups area all about balance; balancing new and old songs, popular song you can sing too and meaning lyrics/ the dopest beats, ( that are good, you know, but are always just on the tip of your tongue), different genres of music, and last but not least, they need to have a good balance in tempo. Maybe starting out fast and hyphy, then chilling out, getting a little funky or soulful, before ending with a BANG!   DJ Cobra started producing mash-ups in 2007, when the novelty of mixing together popular songs was really taking off. With DJ Cobra’s innovative approach to mixing together contemporary and classic tracks together, he became one of the top 20 selling mash-up producers in the world. His remixes have been very well received by the DJ community and consumers, a near-impossible feat.
