DIIV

This the strangest news of the week or at least of the day: the band DIIV has announced that they will reenact your dreams for $10,000? What? This is actually part of a project organized by Houseworld which has a Kickstarter page for this. Created by Brooklyn artist Andrew Hoepfner, Houseworld is described as a ‘new surrealist immersive theater performance’ which wants to make people enter an historic mansion and step into a dreamworld: ‘A new immersive theater performance in which 30 guests enter a mansion, one by one, and step into a lucid dream’. Apparently Houseworld is an original story but it is highly unpredictable as audience members can change the plot and outcome of the story, as exchanges between audience and performers are made during the performance. I see, like a live video game?

The first performances of Houseworld cost $6,000 and were funded mostly by the wallet of creator, Andrew Hoepfner, so this can explain this Kickstarter page. This new season has more ambition with a higher budget (all the details are on the page) and if you want to pledge for this project, you have as usual different possibilities, but the highest bid ($10,000) involves the band DIIV: ‘Describe a dream you’ve had. When you attend this coming season of Houseworld, your dream will be reenacted for you by the band DIIV.’

If most people are like me, that’s gonna be very difficult because I never really remember my dreams, and because there’s no story most of the time, it is just a series of impressions or feelings… Plus what does reenacting means? Are they going to play music since they are a band However, you should act now if you want your dream to come alive, as only 3 people will be able to fill their wish.

I saw DIIV a long time ago, at the outdoor Filter magazine’s Culture Collide festival in Los Angeles, and at the time, frontman Zachary Cole Smith was getting all these Kurt Cobain comparisons. I remember a blonde guy, wearing his hair in the face, some ultra baggy pants and an oversized shirt, totally engaged into furious jumpy dances with his bandmates. The music was a bit all over the place, a dense psychedelia oscillating between dream pop, krautrock and shoegaze with dreamy vocals… So it may be fitting for the purpose of this new project after all. plus it is a good way for DIIV to promote a new album, their sophomore LP ‘Is The Is Are’, which will arrive this fall via Captured Tracks. They posted this on their facebook page a few days ago: ”Is The Is Are’ is 99% done. There’s only one day of mixing left before we master the album. I’m beyond excited to start getting these songs out there to y’all. This is the best material I’ve ever written and I’m impatient as hell to start sharing it. It won’t be long! –c

I don’t have $10,000 to spend on this, but at the end I am not sure I want to reenact my dreams because they are often nightmarish, but if I had to, I would want a band like Arcade Fire or Pink Floyd to re-incarnate them, because I like to think they are that grand!
