Devandra has gone from being an art damaged Los Angelians with a touch Latin AMerican flava to a Warner Brothers recording artist pop star with a touch of Latin AMerican flava and a hit song, "Baby" to his credit.
Me? I think he is a bore and I think he is completely wrong for the venue but from a finger picked solo slice of lo-fi through to a headstrong salsa sounding dance song with a full band at the end, I didn't dislike him much either. Not my scene but for want of something better, I can now see that I didn't really get the man before.
The move to Warners must have changed him somewhat, maybe for the better. I don't have the patience for his more intricate watching wet paints moments but as the set progresses he throws in some more upbeat songs off his Major Label biggie What Will we Be, he played a crowd pleasers with "I Feel Just Like A Child" almost becoming a singalong and "Baby" a fine slice of 1950s doo wop with a straight ahead rhyhthm and a lotta graciousness.
Given my disinterest in the fellow, there is no denying it: this was a good set.
