i really have no idea how Barclay's center have managed to become such a big name in Arena rock in the five boroughs. But I have bought three tickets in the past two days and i would choose MSG over Barclays' any time (MSG is two blocks from where I work) but three big, big, certain sellout gigs, and none of them are at MSG
Depeche Mode – September 6th
Fall Out Boy – September &th
Phoenix – October 2nd.
All recent, all have new albums, all are fairly big time, if not FIRST Tier certainly damn close to first tier rock and roll bands and all should have MSG as ground zero for a rock and roll tour of the States and none of them are playing there. Hell, the Stones went with Barclay (and prudential) instead of MSG.
Now, any reasonable tour manager, especially if they are a hockey and basketball fan, might try and keep as away from snot faced Dolan as possible but I think it must boil down to the price. BC are giving the bands a financial break. PS, I just called Dolan snot faced, undoubtedly true, but Al Pacino as Phil Spector made a good point about successful people. Everybody wants them to get what's coming to. and if they have nothing coming them? Then just claim they are too big for their britches and cut them down any way.
But not me. I don't like Dolan but it is a pain in the ass to go to Barclay's Center and MSG better start getting their act together or sell the damn place or, preferably, both.
As far as these shows are concerned? here is my prediction, Phoenix are gonna kill it and the other two aren't. I might be wrong but that is my firm belief. "Entertainment" is a very good song and the buzz coming out of San Fran's warm up gig has been deafening.
Phoenix – A-
