Death Cab Diabolical Last Night

the boys emote
I’m no fan of Simple Minds (though Jim Kerr was married to Chrissie Hynde and that’s GOTTA count for something) but lest we forget: by the mid-point of their career the whole point of the band was a battle with U2 for who could rule the big rock band classic sound. And on “Don’t You Forget About Me”, which played on the the soundtrack of John Hughs big teen movie for serious teens The Breakfast Club the song was as huge as the emotional breakthroughs of Molly, Ally, Emile et al.
So when I heard Death Cab For Cuties was covering the song for a John Hughs tribute last night at VH-1’s Movie Critics TV Awards show I expected the worst. With all the will in the world, Death Cab are first generation emo + radiohead. They are a pretty good, pretty ordinary band and even less live. I caught em a coupla years ago at Radio City Music Hall and nearly fell asleep. Could they go big is the question.
Death Cab had one thing going for it.They had zero to live up to on this straight drag show. When did Kristin Chenoweth become an asshole? I remeber seeing Kristin as Sally on Broadway in the musicalYou’re A good Man, Charlie Brown” and just thinking: “this girl is perfection”. The role made her a star and TV made her pathetic.
As for the unspeakable Sarah Silverman, she made Adam Lambert, who was giving out the award with her, look like the picture of reasonableness. Which was the point of course. Unfortunately, spending ten minutes saying how much you like penis -especially when Jimmy Kimmel is your ex, is simply not funny…
As for Death Cab>? They were worse than you can possibley imagine. Why the hell, during a tribute to the late John Hughs, they would turn the song into plod goth is absolutely beyond me. Where is the uplight? Where is the underpining hope? Where are the producers of the bloody show? Why didn’t they give em a kick in the pants.
Ugh Ugh Ugh. they shoulda just sung “Equinox” and been done with it.
