Davy Jones calls himself the “Manchester Cowboy” as he rode on stage at BB Kings on Saturday night. Dressed in slightly too tight pants he came on stage and started telling the audience that he had just gotten off a cruise ship and proceeded to crack some lame jokes, he also said that now a days he is paid to travel and not to sing. Some of his jokes were funny but in my opinion he spent too much time telling jokes and not enough time singing. He told us how back in the early 60’s he loved to hang out at the Birdcage Jazz Club in NYC and in 1962 how he enjoyed playing the Artful Dodger in the musical “Oliver” on Broadway
Finally he burst out into song singing songs from the Monkees which included " Mary Mary", "Not Your Steppin Stone", "Daydream Believer" "She Hangs Out", "Pleasant Valley Sunday".Davy also played "Orange Colored Sky" which was made famous by Nat King Cole. And a killer version of the Monkees second biggest Neil Diamond hit “A little bit me a little bit you” The crowd lit up when he played “Look out here comes tomorrow” His voice still sounded good and overall he is a good entertainer. He just needs to replace a few jokes with songs.
Davy seemed to be a little stiff on stage when he performed some dance moves telling the audience that Axle Rose had stolen his dance moves and Justin Beiber had stolen his hair style which got a few laughs. Not so surprisingly at a spritely 66 years old.
He now lives in Florida has 4 daughters and is a grandfather. He said his philosophy is “When life gets too hard to stand, Kneel”
