The Public Theater in New York City will open its doors to a new musical in 213. The production, which explores the life of Filipino First Lady Imelda Marcos, was developed from a concept by former Talking Head, David Byrne, who also wrote the lyrics, and music by Fatboy Slim and Byrne.
The subject matter alone is a tribute to the oddity of both of these performers. A story of Imelda Marcos's rise and fall, all within a throbbing disco soundtrack. This super hip show combines disco beats, choreographed by Annie-B Parson, and a 360-degree scenic and video environment. An attempt to make it intellectual amongst the kitsch' the show delves in to Marcos's obsession with shoes yet explores questions of power and responsibility.
This marks the first theatrical production of Here Lies Love, which was first presented as a concert (they actually called it a 'show cycle'?)at the Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts in 2006 and in concert at Carnegie Hall in 2007. The soundtrack is already available from Nonesuch Records. The double-disc recording of "Here Lies Love" features an odd mix up of performers, including Tori Amos, Steve Earle, Cyndi Lauper, Natalie Merchant, Kate Pierson of the B-52's, Sharon Jones, Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, Santigold, and St. Vincent.
