Vinyl rules again. Ya just aint hip if youre not spinning a disc. Picture discs are all the rage again. I remember colored vinyl as the big draw but heck photo imaged plastic is even more fun. How interesting that everything old is new again- heck we may eventually be getting 45’s on cereal boxes again if this trend continues!
Leave it to the David Bowie camp to camp it up. After the mega success of the ‘Starman’ picdisc released for that God awful Record Store Day, the cash cow has landed.. right in the lap of the amazing “John I’m Only Dancing”. That risqué ode.
What I didn’t realize is that the single never had a US release and it never appeared on a studio album. Are we sure about that?
Recorded too late for inclusion on the 'Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars', it was considered for the following year's 'Aladdin Sane', but never made it on to the final running order. It’s hard to imagine but in researching this oddity it appears to be true.
It was released as a single twice but never on an album that wasn’t a ‘hits’ type thing. That makes this funky picture vinyl all the more fun- if you’re so inclined and if anything it makes cool wall art if you frame it. I wonder how long the vinyl trend is going to last. It can’t be financially beneficial, but it’s a fun fad anyway.
