So there I was grooving on some Decemberists on youtube. So I just left it working on another screen when the song another begins. Nothing Id heard before but I hear and accent so I have to flip over see what it is
Who the hell is Darrel Hanlon and why have I never heard of him?
Why haven’t you cuz you haven’t- don’t lie. Cuz if you had you’d have chimed in and screamed “hey rocknycliveandrecorded why the hell aren’t you writing about Darrel Hanlon’
So here’s what I have gathered in the last 10 min of being obsessed with him;
According to Wikipedia a bloggers Funk and Wagnall, hes an Australian urban folk singer.
Urban Folk? What the hell is that?
According to what I have read he likes to tell stories according to what I have seen, he has the same sort of Victorian imagery I adore, from what I heard he fucking is amazing.
Urban Folk, huh whatever.
As with any musical ‘AHA! moment, I feel compelled to flurry Iman with 1 line emails. Hes nice rarely does he dismiss. But even he liked it which to me is quite comforting as we don’t agree too often. I feel validated.
Hanlons music has lyrics that tell stories. Simplistic and poppy with a touch of darkness to prevent any chance of considering it bubble gum. If you would take The Decemberists and but them in a vita mix with Robin Hitchcock… a dash of Harold Chasen (look it up cuz if you don’t know- you should) and there you have my new side dish obsession. In the video for “Fallen Aeroplanes” he plays a banjo.
Darrel Hanlon I may just love you.
