Thking of writing a post about the new HBO documentary on the making of Springsteen’s Darkness On The Edge Of Town, I stumbled upon this live recording by a really great guy named Patterson Hood who, as part of a local bands cover their heroes for charity in Athens, Ga, played some songs off Darkness.
Patterson is well known for his playing with Drive By Truckers and this is just an obscure thing he did in 2007 for a good cause, an AIDS benefit, but the straight ahead country rock (Hood sounds so Southern it’s funny, he sounds like Bruce pretends to) take holds so much affection for the material and so much pleasure in the performance of these, to be quite a wonderful rehearing of the classic songs (six tracks from “Bad” to “Dark”).
Incidentally, I can remember when grunge first happened and I wondered why people weren’t so influenced by Bruce. Now everybody is. Go figure.
