CMJ 2012 Is Over

And now it's all over, I feel like a summer fling in Majorca, and waking up a couple of days later back in manchester on a gray winter morning and thinking back to the last day of summer. In other words: now it is over I miss it.

Over the four days I couldn't get to more than a handful of concerts (Pareles in NYT, who I wrote about yesterday, attented 100: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/22/arts/music/cacophonous-declarations-of-independents.html?ref=music&_r=0), though everything I saw I really liked. Perhaps the time is right to have year long concerts at Union Square lunches.

As it is , you take your laminate and you wander around Ludlow, Stanton, Bowery, dipping your head into one club after another, catching 20 minutes of a half hour set and heading out while the next band sets up.

You can read Pareles opinion, mine was amazement that EVERYBODY EXCEPT FOR BOTTOM DOLLAR, had a laptop on stage, and watching Air Traffic Controller, fiddling about with enough gizmos to sink the Bismark, I have, since the first time I saw Tune-Yards back in 2010 actually, being amazed at what you can do with sound in 2012.

On Ludlow on Saturday, you couldn't throw a brick without hitting a rock band and on this the 31st (!!!) College Media Journal Music Marathon, you have to admit it speaks volumes about the state of modern pop music. How healthy can you get, all these great bands and all you need is a laminate and many times you need nothing at all, to check them out.

Next year I'd love to take the time off work and really check it out… maybe, right?
