Cheesy Broadway Rocks Of Ages reviewed by Todd Leibowitz

If you’re a fan of the 80s/early 90s (the music, the look, etc…) you will love the show Rock of Ages.

This show stars Constantine Maroulis, who does a absolutely great job. I never liked him on American Idol, but I really like him in this role. He plays a wanna-be rocker who works in the club nameed the Bourbon Room, and all he wants to do is “I Want To Rock!” (then take a guess which song he starts signing….if I have to tell you , then stop reading now).

He meets a young girl named Sherry (again another song coming), who then sleeps with the “bad” guy Stacee Jaxx (who mostly looks like the 80s Bret Michaels). Drew, played by Maroulis, is down and out about this. He decides to pursue his career and lands the opening slot at the last concert at the Bourbon Room.

Through-out the show, the story is told through songs by Journey, Bon Jovi, Poison Night Ranger, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Whitesnake, Extreme, Warrant, Damn Yankees and Joan Jett.

After 20-25 years of listening to these songs, at first you may think hearing them in a Broadway show will be kinda cheesy….however let’s be honest, when we hear the originals of these songs today they are all kinda cheesy. But these are cheese tunes that I grew up with, and most of you grew up with, so you gotta love it.

Check out the song list from the soundtrack below.

In conclusion, go buy a ticket to the show and get blown away. Then buy the CD and t-shirt. You won’t be disappointed. Also, before the show, during intermission and when the show is over, there are 80s/90s hair metal tunes playing on the PA. When I saw the show they played “Once Bitten Twice Shy”, “Shake Me”, “Yankee Rose”, “Girls Girls Girls”, “Sweet Child O Mine” and of course “Rock of Ages!”
