I bought the cheapest tix I could for jane Birkin at the Town Hall on December 11th. The price? $60.
Got me to thinking how in the past ten years the cheap seats have tripled in price. Just last year, a cheap seat at MSG would go $40 or so, now you can't get your foot in the door at under $60. A big concert, say the recent Jay-Z , you are looking at $100 to watch tiny silhouettes.
nyc is one of the most music packed cities in the world, but we have never seen the price meltdown for concerts the rest of the world has. The Cure's three nights at Beacon sold out in a heartbeat, any half way decent show will hit 90% sell out easy. You wait around till the last minute for a rate break in nyc you're gonna be begging some scalper to take your five hundred bucks please.
That Jane Birkin, an important singer but hardly a household name today, can command $60 for a nosebleed is unbelievable. She was $150 for good orchestra seats. Eh?
