Butcher Babies Oakdale Theater Friday January 25th, 2013

Shock rock is a joke really. Its tough to shock us anymore, we the public have seen it all and the horror of the human condition alone has numbed us.  Sadly though cuz when you get to see a band who's official bio calls them 'bitches' your sorta hope to be blown away.

Snatching their name from Wendy O' Williams and the Plasmatics famous tune, these two girls have been opening up for Marilyn Manson on his latest tour.  A soft gig for these LA strip girls

Their bio
These bitches are rude, nasty, mean and they have no problem co-existing in a business that's predominately run by men. And although they look like supermodels and both have playboy on their resumes, they live by one motto:

"Don't bring a knife to the gunfight unless you're willing to sever the finger that pulls the trigger!"

Who wrote that?  Its rather funny and I'm sad that due to bad timing I was unable to speak with them before their show in Wallingford CT.  I want to see just how rude and nasty they are.  See the problem is in researching these girls I've found too much humor in the electrical tape tits and fake blood, let alone the Wal Mart Halloween gloves.  Its just too cheesy its just too stupid and like redneck humor I simply don't get it.  I loved the Youtube comments of 'came for the tits- stayed for the tits' or 'the only reason they get away with being so bad is cuz of their tits'.  Alrighty then maybe this isn't shock rock or sleaze metal after all.  Perhaps the Butcher Babies are actually simply….Tit Rock.

As mentioned in the Marilyn Manson review I fell ill on show night.  With tickets in hand I got my crew to head out and take notes for me.  Using the information provided by some pretty savvy music fans ranging in age from 15-19 we compiled this report.

I am sad to report the girls were not bare chested, yes I know that's the draw but maybe it was the cold Connecticut weather that prevented them from flopping out the girls.  Darn shame.  In exchange though, the band did give some 'ridiculous' head banging with hair flying everywhere and a crowd who must have woken with sever neck discomfort on Saturday morning.

This 'scream core' is  not as abrasive because of the female element.  More screech and less growl but with a 'tight' band behind them the girls offered up plenty of crowd interaction in their late and stripped down (no pun intended) set.  They need more stage work.  Running from one side to another is a great thing but there is more to this genre than that.

As openers for Marilyn Manson you would expect there to be a whole lot of blasphemy but instead Butcher Babies were kind and spent a it of time interacting with the crowd- just not each other.  It was obvious to my colleagues that the guys in the band are really nothing more than structural beams for the girls to swing from.  They don't exist other than to make the music and are completely void of personality.  That being said the band was better than the vocals- which leads me to wonder when the reformations will start.

From the video below you can get a sense of the energy the band had and how the crowd is feeding right into it.  The clarity of the vocals is impressive considering the format (cell phone) and the venue itself which has the acoustical value of a 2 car garage.

That being said we need more than boobs and a fog machine- and the band needs more credit
