"Bridesmaids" Reviewed (More Or Less)

It isn't a cultural divide that differentiates  the "get its" from the "this is awful" when it comes to Kristen Wiig's repulsive movie of humiliation "Bridesmaids". It is a sexual divide. I am guessing women empathize with Maya Randolph pooping in her wedding dress or Kristin excruciatingly uncomfortable sex scenes. I don't.

Maid of Honor Kristen is having a break down after losing her business and her boyfriend, and in a horrible sexual relationship with a cad as her best friend Maya plans her wedding. Kristen is movie star not pretty, a blind date is over heard saying she isn't even pretty which is blatantly untrue. She is pretty and she is also annoying (on SNL as well) and along with her fellow Bridesmaid, she embarrasses herself to a tacked on last chapter where she gets the guy, saves the wedding, gets back with her best friend, so on and so forth ad nauseam. Jesus, even the villain isn't a villain. Chick flick.

Melissa McCarthy deserves a special place in hell for her role here. I realize this is Hollywood but really this is below anybody dignity.

The saving grace is the late great Jill Clayburgh who I've always loved and who is a pleasure to watch.

Why is this a big movie for women? Is it supposed to be a crapped pants and all reality fest? It isn't, you know. This is pure Hollywood fantasy and it leaves no one unsullied in its humorless dross. Are women really so full of self-loathing, they seem themselves in this needy trash? The question with a movie like this is: whose fantasy is it any way? What about Wiig (who co-wrote this) is connecting with women? Is this how they see themselves? Needy nutjobs fighting over everybodies attention? Unable to receive love. It really is horrid.

Musically? Well, this is a fantasy (the sort of fantasy where that Mad Men star is Wiig's booty call) so of course Wilson/Phillips sing "Hold On" -their only hit but a good one- at the ending. My hasn't Phillips aged well. And everybody sings along. Oh, and that's "Rip Her To Shreds">. Otherwise, it is somewhat generic pop soundtrack. they couldn't afford Van Morrison so they used Ryan Adams "Answering Bell" for the emotionl tug the movie proper fails to provide, Nouvelle Vague cover "Blister In The Sun".
