The Brian Jonestown Massacre, the little band that couldn’t, are streaming their new album Who Killed Sgt. Pepper on brianjonestownmassacre.com before its January 1st, 2010 release and it sounds fucking awesome. A sorta psychededelic, trippy, cool as fuck art-rock album.
The last song “Felt Tipped-Pen Pictures Of UFOs” is so deeply strange and disturbing. One half is Lennon’s press conference apologizing for saying the Beatles are bigger than Jesus, “I said what I said and I’m sorry I said it” and the other half of the song is a girl with Liverpuddlian girl dismissing the Lennon legend (the title is her riffing on Lennon’s “Nobody Told Me”. The background is a deeply elegiac organ playing three chords over and over again.
The collagy arty druggy sixty sounds of other songs like “Let’s Go Mental” and “Smoking Acid” reminds me of Primal Scream circa Vanishing Point with the bass on vacation.
I lost complete interest in brian Jonestown Massacre at some point in the proceedings, prolly around the time of the Dandy Warhols movie DiG, Anton Newcolmb just isn’t as interesting as he thinks he is.
Or rather Anton isn’t as interesting as he thinks he is ALL THE TIME. H is plenty interesting on Who Killed Sgt Pepper. My bet is it ends up being one of the best albums of 2010.
