Boys Like Girls pretty much fell off the planet to me because I didn't care enough to follow up on them after their debut album. When they were advertising their newest music video for "Be Your Everything", I decided to watch it and see if I'd been missing anything.
Turns out I wasn't. Musically, their sound has devolved into a streamlined bland version of what they used to be. They used to have some variety in their songs, shown by "Dance Hall Drug" and "Five Minutes to Midnight", which were wonderfully composed and full of twists and turns that kept you tuned in. I loved it about them, but simply grew up and didn't continue following their new releases. "Be Your Everything" had a lot of hype, so naturally I got my hopes up. I forgot how much I liked them a few years ago and I was suddenly craving their sound.
The song is incredibly generic, almost painfully so. It's monotonous with a tinny beat and a constant drone. The vocals are weak; he can do so much more, and so much better, however it seems like they settled and I'm not sure why. He should be singing strongly, because that's what he does best. And with someone who excels at power vocals sings quietly, it's uncomfortable and an unsettling feeling.
As for the video, the setting was interesting and the cinematography was nice and I appreciated it as a photographer. However, the story was boring and it was not captivating at all- I couldn't sit and watch the entire thing. I simply lost interest.
It was disappointing Check it out here with our good friends at Alt Press and score some tour dates as well
