I am the last person in the world to write this post but a shout out on Facebook found some friends coming thru and some… well, not!. Nicole Masaka who is getting married next year, came up with the idea and it is a goodie. But she didn’t suggest any songs for me and so I turned to Facebook who were so very helpful on my Jesus’s playlist post but despite Jane and Diana I got no huge response. Michael Malone is working on his sisters wedding playlist but hasn’t sent it to me yet!!
Diana chose Day of My Life – Bright Eyes, In The Colors – Ben Harper, one of which would please Marie Lynn no end. The elusive Ms. Sherry Porter shared Newsboys “When God Made You”. Helen Back chose “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison… a perfect selection might I say. And then at the reception “Too Drunk To Fuck” by the Dead Kennedy’s. Only our Helen…
Rye Ofrasio chose “i do cherish you” – 98 degrees and my old pal Jane Patterson selected “Come Rain Or Come Shine” by Billie Holiday.
My mistake: I should have gone to my email address book for this one. And I will at a later date. But for now I’ll think about what might be played at a wedding.
Well, for one thing, it depends upon who you’re marrying. Of the many, many girls who completely rejected me, I think, maybe, if she’d let me, have played “I’m Henry the 8th, I am” by Herman Hermits.at my completely imaginary wedding to Anne. She used to sing it to me as we wandered around shops. Though perhaps her own wave, “The Wings Beneath My Feet” -a godawful Bette Midler song, is what I woulda been probably stuck with.
A love of my life, sure. But the love of my life was prolly Nicki. I have HUNDREDS OF SONGS that remind me of Nicki but how many ways can you quote “Love is always scarpering, or cowering or fawning”? Oddly enough she use to sing Jilted John’s “Jilted John” to me and an Italian song called “Angelina”. Me? I have a miles long Nicki set list. “Man Out Of Time” sure, but also “Burning Photographs” and “New York, New York” by Ryan Adams and when the pain gets too bad, “People Who Are Going To Hell” and “Fake friends”… best of all Costello’s cover of “Point Of No Return” -“maybe you’ll break my heart, maybe you’ll be true” I sing and we all know what the reply is!!
There is more… Paul Williams “The Hell Of It”, D”angelo “One Mo’ Gain”, “You Broke My Heart In 17 Places”…. wait wasn’t this a wedding post?
So, seriously, what song? Maybe I’ll go with Helen’s artist but not the same song: Van Morrisons “I Love You” (the smile you smile is you”. Or maybe something by Sam Cooke -who can’t get married to Sam Cooke, right? The Beatles? To obvious but Helen mentioned that her brother who gave her away in place of her late father, played “Imagine”. Pretty cool, I mean if you can’t be sentimental when you’re getting married… Oooo Nat King Cole’s version of “For Sentimental Reasons”!!! I want something perfect but not soppy. I think I’d chose Dion singing Bruce Springsteen’s “Book Of Dreans” I once wrote a novel called “book of dreams:,Near the end the girl, who is married to another man, shows anoher guy her book of dreams, where she dreamed they were getting wedding. . here are the lyrics, what doyou think?:
I’m standing in the backyard
Listening to the party Inside
Tonight I’m drinkin’ in the forgiveness
This life provides
The scars we carry remain but the pain slips away it seems
Oh won’t you baby be in my book of dreams
I’m watchin’ you through the window
With your girlfriends from back home
You’re showin’ off your dress
There’s laughter and a toast
From your daddy to the prettiest bride he’s ever seen
Oh won’t you baby be in my book of dreams
In the darkness my fingers slip across your skin
I feel your sweet reply
The room fades away and suddenly I’m way up high
Just holdin’ you to me
As through the window the moonlight streams
Oh won’t you baby be in my book of dreams
Now the ritual begins
‘Neath the wedding garland we meet as strangers
The dance floor is alive with beauty
Mystery and danger
We dance out ‘neath the stars’ ancient light into the darkening trees
I do know this, I could never marry a woman who chose a Celine Dion song. I could never marry a girl who didn’t find love complicated and want a complicated song. I can’t find my strongest of feelings as easy -Nicki got married last year, Marie lynn is dating a cop, Anne has two teenage kids. Me? I’m listening to “Book Of Dreams”.
