As Alyson wrote of awhile ago those crazy Keys simply wont hop on the Spotify wagon…So why are cant you stream The Black Keys on Spotify? Wait, why would you want to? Well, loads of you do and the boys sat down with VH1 to explain why they simply cannot do it.
Patrick Carney, the cool drummer one said the following
"Streaming services] are becoming more popular, but it still isn’t at a point where you’re able to replace royalties from record sales with the royalties from streams…For a band that makes a living selling music, it’s not at a point where it’s feasible for us."
So it is simply economics. There isn't enough royality in the stream- or so they say. The interesting this is that they're fine with other services such as Pandora, as you can hear their music song by song rather than an album in entirety. He then gets all controversial hipster by jabbing in that Spotify is 'set up to be a little more fair for the labels than for the artists."
Imagine that. So in that statement he is saying that labels benefit more from streaming than a band does. I can tell you right now that I have actually purchased more music and looked up more bands to see live since using Spotify. I am listening to more types of music, rediscovering stuff I had forgotten I loved and searching for tour dates.
I don't like the Black Keys so they ardent my concern. I do think there is a bigger picture that may be obscured by the hipster nerd glasses.
