Roland Howard and Lydia Lunch back in the day
Rowland S. Howard, the Australian guitarist who came to New York with the Birthday Party (the band that gave us Nick Cave) and stayed to become a fixture, and a much loved one at that, on the No New York Lower East Village scene, died at the age of 50. He played with Lydia Lunch, Henry Rollins, Swell Maps.
I remember hearing him open for the Au Pairs many, many years ago and being seriously baffled at the horrible, terrible noise he was strangling out of his instrument. Hated it. But also intrigued.
Howard was waiting for a transplant when he died of liver cancer.
