Big Boi, Camp Bisco 11, Friday July 13, 2012

Big Boi, or Antwan Patton, has sure come a long way from his days with Outkast. Granted, he did play Ms. Jackson on Friday night at Camp Bisco, and it was phenomenal, but his own personal style was mixed in there which both recognized his old music career and separated him from it.

At Camp Bisco, the artists that aren’t all about techno and dubstep are few and far between. Big Boi is much more rap and hip hop than dance music so it’s not really too surprising that he did well at Bisco, but I still think it’s a bit of an accomplishment. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, a lot of the Bisco attendees love just one type of music. Yet the entire Big Boi crowd on Camp Bisco 11’s Friday night was in love with what was going on on stage.

While some of the songs Big Boi performed were familiar, Ms. Jackson and his popular debut single Shutterbugg to name a couple, the ones that weren’t familiar to me were just as good. Like many rappers performing live, Big Boi was up there with a DJ and a friend and he was all over the stage. He put energy behind every word which is not something you can say for many rappers. Even if when you couldn’t quite hear him because of the sheer volume of the music and crowd, Big Boi just kept up the energy and got louder so you could hear his sharp lyrics. I remember watching 50 Cent perform on SNL and thinking that his dreadfully monotonous tone could’ve been improved by abit more liveliness.

Big Boi’s movements were very much reflected in his audience. In the below video of part of Big Boi’s performance you can see an energy in the crowd that easily shined through the rising dust clouds and late afternoon haze. People were dancing around almost as much as they were at the midnight rave shows. And it’s really no wonder why. That bass was shaking the port-a-potties.

After drawing one of the largest Bisco crowds this year,Big Boi is sure to be back next year for Camp Bisco 12
