Best Coasts And Waves to Tour Together: Loose And Tight -by Iman Lababedi

News that Best Coast and Wavves are touring together is pretty damn thrilling even if you don’t like one of the bands because, cmon folks, Nathan Williams in a rock god in waiting and Bethany Costawasserface is one step ahead of barefoot and pregnant, at least thematically (which was what was driving Marnie Stern bats).

But, despite twitting each other all day, and sharing cats, and, fucking?, I dunno, I’m not up with my rock star gossip, they are flip sides of the same coin except the coin has a dent on the Bethany side.

So I like Best Coast more than I did. Maybe the shellacking she has been getting from the Marnie Stern’s if the world has brought out the maternal, er, paternal… well made me feel protective. Crazy for You is a little bland, a little dull, a little obvious, but what matters most, the actual songs are pretty good. Almost-y ambient in effect, Alyson thought she was drier than dry ice live and who am I to doubt.

Wavves are coming off their worst album yet, Kings Of the Beach, though, much like Best Coast, as the songs descent to format, the toons kick in hard, and you kinda forgive em that ordinariness. The truth is, not every song Wavves record is “No Hope Kids” and I have hard a tough, tough time warming to Nathan’s band of drunkard rocker. When Patrick Stickles takes centerstage there is a stagger suggested in his stature, Nathan? Nathan just staggers.

But Wavves were so great at Bowery Ballroom earlier this year, the concert of the summer season, I forgive them the intense messiness of the album and the drunken loutishness of their performance.

Still, how good would it be if Wavves tightened and Best Coast loosened up?

All the dates I’ve heard about are in Europe but I think it is a foregone conclusion they take this on the road (ps: I thought it was a foregone conclusion LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip would tour together after their European jaunt so who knows). Sure hope they bring a little medical sun into Manhattan this winter.
