Be Here Now: New Releases Snapshot Review 10-22-13

DJ wants no new friends and won’t make any

Suffering From Success – DJ Khaled – When did everyone start whining in the world of hip hop? More of the same with Khaled plus Maybach Music – C

Prism – Katy Perry – Some of this OK but some of this is lachrymose bullshit, “By The Grace Of God” maybe her worst song to date. “Birthday” on the other hand is a blast – C+

Better Together – Fifth Harmoney – US attempt at an all girl 1D via X Factor is not without its dance-haromony pleasures – B-

Burials – AFI – “The Sinking Night”, “I Hope You Suffer”, “A Deep Slow Panic” -and that’s just the first three songs. Punk metal goth – C-

Brave Enough: Live At The Variety Playhouse – Sara Bareilles – This chick is the absolute pits, her song “Manhattan” should be taken out and shot at first light and her idea of fun is slowing down “Bennie And The Jets” – D

Tales Of Us – Goldfrapp – Never before has a woman sounded more like her name, slow paced mood music – C-

Everybody – SHINee –  Remember K-Pop, well this is full on electronic K-Pop with a flash of r&B. Not bad but G-Dragon ain’t losing sleep – B

Smoke And Mirrors – Brett Dennen – The equal of 2011’s Loverboy, which was first rate singer songwriter from Cali – B+

Aftershock – Motorhead – The Ramones of metal (or were the Ramones the Motorhead of punk) do what they’ve always done: loud, fast riffaramas on their 21st album – B+

Love In Portofino – Andrea Bocelli – Brutal crap from faux-opera singer – C-

Fade Away – Best Coast – The joys of EPs, 7 tracks, under half an hour, every one a winner – A

Wenu Wenu – Omar Souleyman – Arabic pop crossed over Stateside, maybe because of the dance production on the beats – B+

Labor – JD Samson And Men – EDM from the underground – B

Shulamith – Polica – A little snoozy electronic indie band, they were pretty good live – C
