All bands need managers. Musicians are great ( or at least supposedly) at making music. By definition, it’s their greatest talent. Not always true. Some are multi talented. Can sing or dance or maybe even double dutch jump rope.
Their are rare cases of true renaissance men or woman. Jayz can sure sell drugs, “I came into this mutha fucker, hundred grand strong, nine to be exact, from selling g packs”. Jim Morrison can slay some vag, ( a sex god even) watch The Doors movie (one of my favorite movies ever. Val Kilmer is amazing, so is Meg Ryan). but one thing they aren’t that great at is dealing with people. That why bands needs managers.
There are countless interactions that a band must have with venue owners, promoters, engineers, producers, record companies. before they can make songs and play shows. This process is expedited, completed more efficiently, and benefits the band’s career goals when a professional handles these things.
Particularly for a band that is starting out, they must be easily reached and respond rapidly to fill slots in line-ups. If they can’t be reached, they can’t be slotted in and a missed opportunity is a lost opportunity. Musicians didn’t get into the business to balance books and write out touring itenaries. They need somebody to say be here now and leave the band members free to pursue their muse.
Bottom line- too much bull shit to deal with by your self. Some people just have a knack for other people; they understand them, they can assist best because they know how others may feel or think. They keep it as real as humanly possible. They are good people.
And you want them on your side
