Bjork memorably dubbed Lars Von Triers SATAN after starring in his bizarrely moving movie “Dancer In The Dark” -a strangely resonating musical about blindness. The music was released as the Bjork solo album Selmasongs in 2000 and is her best music of this decade. The Thom Yorke (why does Yorke work so well with women? His duet with PJ Harvey was equally excellent) conjoined “I’ve Seen it All” was a highlight but it was all very, very good and despite her being exceedingly rough on Bjork the result was a strange reworking of Dennis Potter’s “Pennies From Heaven” in a quasi Dogme 95.
I am a long time fan of Von Triers going back as far as “Europa” and once sitting in the Walter Reade for five hours to watch the entire Danish TV movie “The Kingdom” -about a hospital filled with poltergeists, also directed by the man. His latest movie “antichrist” is spooling as part of the New York Film Festival and I have got my tix for the Saturday October 3rd, 1pm airing.
“antichrist” stars Charlotte Gainsborg, simply one of the most gorgeous women in the world. Gainesborg is the daughter of Serge gainsborg, the French icon and with whom she sang “Peppermint Incest” with as a child (yeah, I know) and Jane Birkin. Birkin and Serge teamed up for the orgasmic pop masterpiece “Je T’Aime Moi Non Plus” back in the day. I first saw Charlotte in the movie, directed by her Uncle, “The Cement Garden”. Based upon Ian McEwan’s brilliant novel back when he wrote brilliant novels, it is about a teenage brother and sister trying to keep their family together after their parents die and falling into an incestous relationship. “antichrist” is even wilder I hear!!
Gainsborg is also a pop star sensation whose 2006 5:55 reached the top of the French charts, it is pretty good French dance pop.
Anyway, I can’t wait to see the movie and I hope Gainsborg (Von Triers is scared of airflight and has never been to the States!!) will be there for the Q&A. If you are in the area you should try and catch it at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln center.
