And A Child Shall Leads Us: Mayday Parade by Helen Bach and Mary Magpie

Ya know its time for me to admit defeat on a venture I took. One dinner conversation began with…..Pete Wentz is a fat father. Who’s the new Fall out Boy? Ok harsh yeah I know. But it was me and my kid and well I had to know. Yeah, it was me asking that question, not her.

Fall Out Boy kicked our asses. We loved them. We have traveled high and low to see them we have met them and I have hung them on my wall. (Ok I have the shirtless Wentz Rolling Stone cover hanging in my office Whats it to ya?)

To me it was the first band me and my daughter could rock out to. YES! my kid has good taste in music! WOOOOOOO HOOO , cuz let me tell you if she evolved into a freakin Nickelback fan thered be a blanket bundle on someones doorstep. Shes got a great ear and is a fab musician in her own right.

So ok.. whaddaya got? Shes the one who turned me on to Panic and the Fueled by Raman brigade of emoliciousness…well well c’mon kid whats next?!?!

Mayday Parade.

huh? Apparently they’re going to be the next FOB. k…well……’s what my kid Mary Magpie says:

Fall Out Boy. What comes to mind when you hear the name? Perhaps a band with a fan base of extremely loyal diehards. Or, maybe, you think of them as “sellouts”. Whatever your opinion is, we all have to come to the realization that one of them has a child and is married and they’re growing older. What happens when this occurs? A band loses its cool factor. Who will replace the emo/alt. band that everyone knows?

The alternative/pop outfit Mayday Parade, from Tallahassee, Florida, may just have it in the bag. Extremely catchy lyrics, five young and attractive members, and incredible stage presence have led me to believe that they deserve not only more fans, but more press.

Not only is their persona similar to FOB’s, but they’re musically similar. Just listen to Mayday’s “Black Cat” and FOB’s “A Little Less 16 Candles, a Little More Touch me” and let me know just how much you think that they both rock. Of course no one wants the same exact sound as another band, but the alt scene is full of swoopy-banged, emaciated-looking, guitar-playing boys and it’s easy to confuse them. Sure it’s a stereotype, but am I wrong? You gotta stand out to make it.

As a huge fan of both of these bands, it’s hard to compare them. My friend, Ron , who is equally as big as a fan mused “Well I like them because they write catchy songs. Sure they’re a bit on the emo side, but that stuff sells so it’d only help them get bigger. The instruments always sound good & Derek has a wonderful voice.” I couldn’t agree with him more. It’s so easy to lose yourself when listening to their entire discography. – Respectfully submitted, Mary Magpie

Yeah ok, so I grab their latest release Anywhere But Here and hit the road. That’s how I can listen best… uh… no.

I made it through three songs before switching to NPR. This is just another cookie cutter flash in the pan, wait there isn’t even a flash. They’re watered down soup of the same stock. Mayday Parade is fine. Great? No. The new FOB? uh uh no way. We go to see them live on November 6th with The Academy is…, Ill let you know if they change my mind live, or if you should expect a bundle of blankets on your doorstep.
