All the stuff about an illness killing Amy Winehouse misses one point about her death: what got her was a bad tab of ecstasy. Life and death are enormously random and anyone can die and will die at any time.
I was reading about a 10 year old girl who fell out of her van and died Sunday evening. There is little difference between her and Amy: she died because she wasn't wearing her safety belt but that doesn't mean SHE HAD TO DIE BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T WEAR A SAFETY BELT.
Jim Morrison electrocuted himself in a bathtub, Hendrix suffocated on his own puke, Stiv Bators was walking drunkenly across a street in Paris and got run over, Presley got his subscription wrong, Hank Williams accidentally OD'd, Johnny thunders -an expert junkie, got 100% pure heroine by mistake.
All of these people could have lived but it wasn't drugs, not really, that killed them. It was the luck of the draw. It was just what happened. They might have lived forever and instead they didn't, instead they died just like that.
We want to blame death on something else:a terrible disease killed Amy, Jimi, Elvis but that's because we don't want to face what really killed em: death did. It is random, meaningless, irrelevant: it just happens, it can just happen, no reason.
There was a recent study of people who come from families with longevity in their family tree. Drunks, druggies, smokers… they all lived into their 90s. There you go: better living by chemistry.
So they all cry over Amy: if only, if only, this terrible addiction killed her. Yeah, the terrible addiction is to living and we will all die.
