Amoeba music is ten years old this month! It is hard to believe it, but yeah I have been going to this store for 10 years. At a time when allr ecord stores disappear one after one from the urban landscape, the world’s largest independent store is still standing up, stronger than ever.
With only 3 locations in the world, the Southern California branch was added on November 17, 2001, and what was supposed to be a little local store, has now grown into a $50 million business (may be even more, this number comes from a business week entry of 2005).
You simply can find everything in the store, new or used CDs, vinyl and DVDs, posters, t-shirts, books,… and the free concerts! Their selectionis really huge and their staff very knowledgeable. And every time I goI got the impression that their main clientele and staff is connected to music as most people hanging out there look like they are in a band.
So happy 10th Birthday, Amoeba Hollywood! And for the occasion, theyhave a party this weekend. KCRW DJs will be on stage almost all daylong on Saturday (from noon to 10 p.m), giving out goodies and Amoeba gift certificates.
Here is the lineup:
Chris Douridas (noon-2p)
Anne Litt (2-5p)
Liza Richardson (6-8p)
Henry Rollins (8-10p)
