Before Faces there was Small Faces. Singer Steve Marriott was considered the best of the best vocalists in Brit pop but hey after his abrupt departure he cleared the way for Rod Stewart to have a career.
Small Faces were the heroes of the Mod scene. I adore the Mod scene, brought to the forefront of pop culture by The Who’s film Quadrophenia, it really was a well romanticized fad. Was it a fad? I actually wish it wasn’t. It’s just too cool.
Wikipedia defines it as:
Mod is a subculture that originated in London, England, in the late 1950s and peaked in the early to mid-1960s.Significant elements of the mod subculture include fashion (often tailor-made suits); music, including African American soul, Jamaican ska, British beat music, and R&B; and motor scooters. The original mod scene was also associated with amphetamine-fuelled all-night dancing at clubs.[4] From the mid-to-late 1960s and onwards, the mass media often used the term mod in a wider sense to describe anything that was believed to be popular, fashionable, or modern.
It even reads well. Starting now The Who won’t be the only one taking this to the public A new show is coming London called “Mod” based upon Small Faces and the Mod scene. I doubt it will ever make it to the US because we have no allegiance to that movement but I sure hope it makes it to film, Id even go see it!
Original band members Ian Mc Lagan and Kenny Jones are advisors on the production. The musical is set to arrive in London in 2014 and will mark the 50th anniversary of the ‘Mod’ era, an era that redefined British music. Stay tuned, can’t help but wonder what actors will be in on this- and if Rod Stewart will show up. (hope not)
