Many years ago I interviewed the Pretenders, wrote the story and mailed it to Creem. Upon publication I was shocked to discover my story was simply terrible. It was very, very poorly written. I called my editor Dave DiMartino and apologized, “You write a lot for us,” he said, “You’re gonna miss it sometimes.” But I was mortified.
This afternoon I posted a story about Thin Lizzy and the Quality Street Gang and it is just plain awful and I apologize. I started it in the wrong place, I kept on one song when I should have gone deeper, my concentration was shot or maybe I just plain suck.
I had been planning to write it for a couple of weeks and I couldn’t quite think it through. I was going to start it before lunch and I managed a paragraph and when I came back to finish it was one long struggle. By the end I was plagiarizing Tim Reilly’s style. Ugh.
Anyway, I was going to delete but I think I’ll leave it up and at some point I hope to try writing it anew and hopefully get it right and leave “Black, Irish, and cool…” my testament to how sometimes writing is simply a drag.
For now, all apologies.
