In the 40s Frank Sinatra would play five sets a day at sold out houses beginning at 11am. Today most concerts, not even nightclubs, but concert halls, have the main act begin anywhere from nine to 1030pm. It is pathetic. Customers are paying $250 a tix and can’t stay till the end. Forget kids at all (remember kids Mr. Promoter? You used to beat them up when you were young).
Why would Highline not do 2pm shows on the weekend – a coupla acts doing half an hour, forty-five minutes, all ages. They could make money. If “Monsters Of Folk” have sold out the Beacon on Sunday Nov 8th (and even if they haven’t) why not add a day show? If Sinatra could do five, why can’t MOF do two? Even if they haven’t sold out they would reach a different audience. Parents who wouldn’t let their kids at till 1am might let them our rill 5pm.
As a man with a full time job trying to be true to his readership I am sleep deprived going to concerts. By the time i get home it’s 1230am, 1am -later.
As far as an MSG is concerned, if it is a big act with a huge stage to construct… Why not start the opening act at 7p instead of 815p? Why a forty-five minute break? Have the main act on by 8pm and we can be home by 11…
Yesterday I went to the Whitney and it began promptly at 7p and I was home in time to see the Yanks get their ass kicked by the white sox.The good life.
