A Few Songs Celebrating Blasphemy To Honor Charlie Hebdo Victims

We are always speechless when horror happens, and what else can we do? Cry, be devastated and mad at the killers, but in this case we need to be sure we honor their courage and their strong belief in freedom of expression. Because freedom of expression is something I strongly believe in, and I can only admire people who have had the courage to live their convictions till the end, fully aware of the risks they were taking, people like the editor of Charlie Hebdo, Stephane Charbonnier, who has said he would ‘prefer to die standing than live on their knees’. The problem is that he died, and this is not acceptable. We should all standing today and revolt against intolerance. We should make the voices of these cartoonists resonate louder than ever.

They died because they were satirists, but not any satirists, they dare to mock religion and Islam out of all religions…They had been sued and had received death threats since 2012, they had already been attacked, but they continued nevertheless. Because of their irreverence, their courage and their love for blasphemy, I loved them. I grew up watching Cabu’s apparitions on French TV, drawing funny cartoons, I remember all Wolinski’s sexually and sacrilegious comics. They were fearless, and were even mocking death itself, Wolinski once said to French newspaper Le Monde: ‘I want to be incinerated. I told my wife: you’ll throw my ashes in the toilet, this way I’ll be able to see your butt everyday.’

All the cartoons that you have seen circulating around social media translate it so well: a pencil seems so vulnerable facing a gun, but it is in fact the mightiest weapon, the weapon which can produce the most powerful and lasting effect without killing anyone…

These artists died in the name of Allah, God, blasphemy,… something I can’t comprehend. These artists died to defend our rights to speak against anything, to be able to criticize anything, even religion. Having the right to discuss and criticize any opinions is an essential human emancipation, and for non-believers like me, religions are just this, an opinion. ‘God is the victim that doesn’t exist’ was saying the late great Christopher Hitchens, and there is no way I can make sense of barbaric acts like this one, I consider blasphemy the ultimate punk revolt, not only the revolt against authority but against the ultimate authority:god. Here is a series of songs celebrating blasphemy to honor those who died this week, this is for you Cabu, Wolinski, Charb and all the others:

Tori Amos: ‘God’ (1994): ‘God sometimes you just don’t come through/Do you need a woman to look after you/God sometimes you just don’t come through’

Pet Shop Boys: ‘It’s a Sin‘ (1987): ‘Whatever you taught me/I didn’t believe it/Father you fought me/’cause I didn’t care/and I still don’t understand’

Joan Osborne: ‘One of Us‘ (1995): ‘What if God was one of us?/Just a slob like one of us/Just a stranger on the bus/Trying to make His way home’

Depeche Mode: ‘Blasphemous Rumours‘ (1984): ‘I don’t want to start /Any blasphemous rumors/But I think that God’s /Got a sick sense of humor/And when I die/I expect to find Him laughing’

Lady Gaga: ‘Judas‘ (2011): ‘I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel/But I’m still in love with Judas, baby’

Madonna: ‘Like a Prayer‘ (1989): ‘I close my eyes, Oh God I think I’m falling/Out of the sky, I close my eyes/Heaven help me’

Slayer: ‘Jesus Saves‘ (1986): You go to the church, you kiss the cross/You will be saved at any cost/You have your own reality/Christianity/You spend your life just kissing ass’

Slayer: ‘The Antichrist‘ (1983): ‘I am the Antichrist/It’s what I was meant to be/Your God left me behind/And set my soul to be free’

XTC – ‘Dear God’ (1986): ‘But all the people that you made in your image/See them starving on their feet/’Cause they don’t get enough to eat from God/I can’t believe in you

Nine Inch Nails: ‘Heresy‘ (1994): He’s got the answers to ease my curiosity/He dreamed a god up and called it Christianity/Your god is dead and no one cares/If there is a hell I’ll see you there’

Anti-Flag: ‘A Song For Jesus Christ’ (1994): ‘Ok…. this song is for Jesus Christ…./Fucking cunt…ruined my life/Fuck You…!!!!!!!/You fucking cunt…… fuck you!’

A Perfect Circle: ‘Judith’ (2000): ‘How the savior has abandoned you/Fuck your God/Your Lord and your Christ/He did this/Took all you had and/Left you this way/Still you pray, you never stray/Never taste of the fruit/You never thought to question why’

Roger Waters: ‘What God Wants, Pt 1’ (1992): ‘God wants peace/God wants war/God wants famine/God wants chain stores/What God wants God gets/God wants sedition/God wants sex/God wants freedom/God wants semtex/What God wants God gets’

Bad Religion: ‘God’s Love’ (2004): ‘In a careless creation/When there’s no “above”/There’s no justice/Just a cause and a cure/And a bounty of suffering/It seems we all endure/And what I’m frightened of/Is that they call it “God’s love”

Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins: ‘Born Secular’ (2006): ‘God goes/where he wants/and who knows/where he is not/Not in me’

Fucked Up: ‘Son the Father’ (2008): ‘Father, father, come see what I’ve built/Made civilization out of the Nile silt/Built your monuments out of my brother’s bones/Exalted your words in flesh-bound tomes’

Tyler the Creator: ‘French’ (2010): ‘I’m opening a church to sell coke and Led Zeppelin/And fuck Mary in her ass.’

John Lennon: ‘Imagine’ (1971): ‘Nothing to kill or die for/And no religion too/Imagine all the people/Living life in peace’
