She & Him have released three albums and I loved one of them, was indifferent to the one in the middle, and didn't much care for the Christmas one. I saw em on stage once and thought they were OK and it was kinda cool to see Queen of Ditz Zooey Deschanel up close, and this was pre-New Girl as well s…, but M. Ward is so boring and while the set was OK it was nothing great.
But July 6th (a Saturday and July 4th weekend) with the stars out and all those sweet sounds. You know, it could be a really wonderful meeting of time and place, maybe what we need to herald the heart of summer. Zooey has one of those personalities that put you at ease while leaving you in awe, plus, hey she married that Death Cab guy for awhile so who knows? Maybe wimps and nerds stand a chance.
Listening to Volume 1, the cover of "I Should Have Known Better" and "Sentimental Heart" it is such a rush of pleasure, you can't help but feel they can do it again live. Volume 2 has neither of those songs and is the worst for it. The Beatles track has always been a joyful song, it works on the lightest of slight of hand, "I should have known better with a girl like you" suggests a scolding, "that I would love everything that you do" might mean she was wrong to, but the "and I do," then especially "hey hey hey" before "and I do" is happiness. The love is working out.
It is a perfect song for this duo.
And perhaps when they get on stage in a mid( 500) summer nights dream they can transport us to a world where love does work out and happiness and even "sentimental hearts might find some peace somewhere".
