We meet bands so often that have this squeaky good guy image and are the biggest hypocrites ever. I can crank out a list of the shitty artists who fans adore because they’re ‘so chill’, ‘awesome’ and ‘amazing’ but who when fans aren’t around are pretty much the opposite of all of that. It’s human nature.
As performers you want fans to love you so you put on a show and give um what they want and when the house lights come up the real you shines bright.
What I love more than anything are those bands I have encountered who are legit. Lions Lions are legit. Freezing our asses off in the lobby of the Webster Theater bassist Johnny Kay worked diligently to remove the case from my cell phone (it was stuck I have no idea how but if he didn’t get it off I my charger wouldn’t have fit. He is a hero!) and we chit chatted on the most common of levels, so much so that they described themselves as generic.
We discussed their videos- live concert footage and they honestly admitted it was the cheapest way to go. Get a crowd of your friend and have at it. We got the nod that a non- footage vid was due out soon and well- here it is. These wonderful guys used their ‘big budget’ opportunity not to strut and dick wag but to bring attention to the cause of homelessness. Using Boston as a backdrop to the injustice of our fellow man without a roof. How they can go from such upbeat youth to such serious commentary is glorious and I wish I could run back to see them one more time just to hug them for being so inspiring. I adore this band, I adore their ‘everyman’ persona because its real. The trick here is I wish ‘everyman’ was as kind and forthright as you.
