Johnny Marr, "The Messenger" Video Review

Johnny Marr is a genius.  If you're a 49 year old who gained fame in the 80's you really don't want anyone to get too close.  You have to preserve the former you so your old fans feel young and potential new fans don't think you're a pops.

Beautifully done in this black and white and well lit video for Marr's single "The Messenger".  I went in wanting to hate the former Smiths first solo offering and ended up loving it (much to my disgust).  Often called one of the greatest guitarists of our time Marr has been bridesmaid to everyone from Modest Mouse to The The.

Marr takes on role of bride, like a boss.  This soft and melodic romp is so wonderfully accompanied by Marr's stroll through nature.  Yes, there are idiotic parts (what up with that jumping son?) but  there are some simply beautiful scenes as well.  Perfect lighting keeps Marr in the haze leaving only his Paul Weller hairdo as homage to his youth.

The vocals for the single are expertly modified with some fine engineering.  Leaving him sounding a cross between Robin Hitchcock and Stone Roses.. ish.  There is a clear and unique Brit sound to it and its not a grasp at being a kid again.  Though the lyrics are redundant its quite alright as they bop you along the trip.

Love Johnny, sorry Mose.  I feel like I'm a double agent but honestly- this song is fantastic.  The new official solo album is not out until February so this will need to hold us over until then, but I'm sure there will be more leaks and streams.  Hot damn.
