A bunch of grown men singing about girls just want to have fun, slowed down with faux soul. That’s the easiest way to describe this Punk Goes Pop tune from The Maine and Taking Back Sunday’s Adam Lazzera. What exactly is Adam attempting here? There are songs that should be left in their original form and those that can stand a bit of modification. That’s been one of my sore points with ‘Punk Goes’ covers.
I started out 100% certain I was going to hate this. Seriously even the thought of remaking this tune is horrible. The band altered the tempo and threw in some awkward pitch changes and it came out as..not so bad.
I am in no way saying this is great song- I don’t think that it is. But what I do find is that it takes the original and modernizes it. What was once the Girls Night Out anthem oozes in to an almost boys lament. Pointless and unmoving but interesting enough to hang on to me for awhile. I have often sang the praises of Fearless Records “Punk Goes…”, and this is a bold move from the little label that could. Taking this classic tune and mucking it up made it just a smidge cooler.
