Vampire Weekend! It has been such a long time we hadn’t heard from you! The New York band debuted a new song on Jimmy Kimmel Live – actually the same one they played at a very intimate show at Cleveland’s House of Blues on July 12th – but this time we know the title: ‘Unbelievers’. They performed the fun tune on Halloween night wearing skulls makeup, a weird contrast with the lightness and upbeat spirit of their music.
After listening to it, I would say I want to repeat some of the lyrics of the song, ‘I’m not excited but should I be?’, I mean the song is really bouncy and dynamic, and I had it in repeat in my head after listening to it only twice, demonstrating how catchy the music is, but I was expecting a little more for some reason…. I like the end with these bright trumpets and its very Vampire-Weekend-touch although.
That’s the problem when a band becomes really big after only two very successful albums, the expectation is so big, that you always want better and better, and something more…exciting? May be the light Ramoney beginning and the happy chorus of the song will grow on me,… but I would say that cute is not enough at this point!
However, lyrics like the following ones,‘We know the fire awaits unbelievers/All of the sinners, the same/Girl you and I will die unbelievers/bound to the tracks of the train’, are totally a riot.
And what about the upcoming album? Last April, Ezra Koenig said to Rolling Stone it could be released by the end of the year, but it seems less and less likely now.
