We love winners! We love to ‘most poplars’’ and any other superlative. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is one of the biggest shams on Earth but we eat it with a spoon and consider it an honorable institution.
It validates the fan. “OMG! I like them too!!”.
As a fan of alternative its almost an insult. I don’t want to be in the herd of fans I want to be the only one who knows who a band is, then I want them to break up and be the only person who has ever seen them live. Its elitist in its purist form.
Unfortunately the rest of the world really doesn’t share my feeling because come next summer there is a new Hall of Fame in Pennsylvania. Rock and Roll was apparently too narrow a spectrum for now we have- the Pop Music Hall of Fame.
In this particular category we have another twist. We the People can vote in the nominees. Not just the fat cats over at Rolling Stone, which is how the RNR HOF rolls.
The Beatles, Elvis and Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, Tony Bennett, and Neil Diamond are among the top 40 nominees in place as we speak. Fans as well as industry folk can vote online during the next few weeks. Voters will also be asked to pick their top five songs from a list of 100 released between 1966 and 1975. This list was compiled b the Hall of Fame selection panel. The top 10 tunes will be inducted.
The American Pop Music Hall of Fame is scheduled to open next July in a temporary home in what’s now a cafe in Canonsburg, PA just outside Pittsburgh. Fundraising is under way for a permanent building
